As soon as you mention Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or SEO to the average person, you can expect the blood pressure to rise and the eyes role back in anticipation of being asked the question. “Which social media tools do you use? “ Many of you would like to say “all of them and I am loving it”. Well some people do love it but very few use all of them. You would be relieved to know that the majority are “consumers” of social media or social networking but not “practitioners” of it.
What’s the difference? Well lets put it this way, you maybe one of the many millions of people who use Facebook to share your daily activity with family and friends but you may not be so adept at building a successful fan page for your business. If you recognise that pattern then you are not alone. The most successful social media tools as mentioned at the beginning of this article engage its consumers at the personal level until they become familiar and comfortable with the general features and benefits before moving them onto the more sophisticated elements which often lie in the business packages.
The packages often come with tutorials and manual downloads or step by step video guides but all encourage you to get onto an adoption ladder leading to commercialised services. It would be understandable to think that it is all a marketing ploy but actually it helps to graduate the individual from “consumer” to “user” and then “practitioner”, which is the desirable and sensible way to grow using these media formats.
Here are some tips to help you to move forward comfortably;
1. Only use tools/services you feel comfortable with and then master it.
2. Select the services that have good video tutorials and help facility. Often can be found on YouTube done by third party practitioners also.
3. Don’t over stretch yourself. Your time is valuable.
4. Be patient and do a little but often.
5. Quality is better than quantity if you want to build relationships.
6. Don’t be afraid to get professional support to help get you started.
It takes time to build a decent social network using social media but a healthy commitment should prove to give a return on investment and a patient approach will breed confidence before you know it. You will notice your confidence growing when other people start to ask you for advice. It may come as a surprise when it happens and particularly when you know the answer. It is at this time you will really begin to enjoy it.

It is fair to say that creating a successful social media campaign is not easy or are we just technophobes? The concept of networking and relationship based activity is almost as old as the hills. For most the problems start with the pace of change and the time to learn it yet alone do it successfully.
The tools are evolving all the time and in pretty exciting ways. Many of which are Free such as Facebook.com, Linkedin.com and Twitter.com have proved themselves useful as social network services as has Wordpress.com, Typepad.com and Tumblr.com for publishing all the way to Hootsuite.com, Ping.fm and Tweetdeck.com for message management and even Gist.com for Social CRM (Client Relationship Management). Have I lost you yet? No, good.
So what can we do to make it work for us? Here are some ideas to consider before you get too deep in the techie stuff:
1. Develop a simple digital marketing strategy and identify target market profiles you hope to attract.
2. Create micro promotional campaigns that have a limited shelf life that are packed full of benefits to the target audience. Then rotate campaigns to keep it fresh.
3. Understand the nature of the selected social media services and limit yourself to the ones most commonly used by the target audience per micro campaign (no more than four at any one time).
4. Provide Clear and Relevant “calls to action” in your promotions or posts and keep the message simple.
5. Be invitational in your communication style and allow people to contribute to your agenda.
6. Commit at least six hours per week to your social media activity.
7. Be patient, it takes time to see a return on investment from your social media efforts but it’s worth it.
8. If budget allows seek ICEWIRE 's professional support to aid you in the setup, establish a sound foundation and design quality.

1. Ensure to have a marketing strategy and view of who you want as followers or as an audience for your message announcements.
2. Present simple and clear messages that lead to an action for the viewer to follow periodically.
3. Make sure your branding is consistent and carries through to any other of your sites or blogs.
4. Periodically provide something for nothing. This doesn't have to be costly; it could be information or fact sheets etc. This provides opportunities to be seen as an authority on your topic.
5. Post information about your project successes and interesting features rather than always hammering your audience with a sales pitch.
6. Respond to your follower’s directly as much as possible, post photos with your tweets if possible and add your personality into your messages.
These pointers are not exhaustive but a simple and effective set of principles to help you get started.
